In 1819 Thomas Jefferson fulfilled his lifelong ambition to create a new and better institution of higher learning. The University of Virginia would prepare Americas future leaders to protect their young democracy. It would facilitate open exchange between students and professors, unlock the potential of the nation s best and brightest minds, and encourage students and faculty to advance knowledge and break traditional boundaries.

UVa-Wise will continue to build up its liberal arts core in ways that will make it a regional leader in interdisciplinary education, engaged learning and community service. The college will increase its commitment to experiential learning through international study, guided research and internship opportunities.
The college will enhance and expand STEM-H programs through the liberal arts. The student body will be better qualified, more inspired and more diverse—primary elements in our path toward excellence.
The Faculty Senate, with the concurrence of the President, approved revisions to the University s mission statement on May 15, 2013, to replace the statement that had been in effect since May 31, 1985. The Board of Visitors, after making additional modifications, approved the mission statement on November 15, 2013. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) approved the mission statement on January 14, 2014, to be effective 30 days following adjournment of the 2014 General Assembly.
With these goals in mind, The University of Virginias College at Wise strives to become an outstanding liberal arts college recognized for its commitment to and expansion of the college s traditional liberal arts foundation. In order to achieve this, the college is committed to a series of endeavors that will strengthen the institution and its mission.
